Sakeena Moeen

(UOL First Class Distinction Holder 2017).

Sakeena Moeen is currently working at the International Energy Agency in Paris within their Office of Legal Counsel. After completing her LLB with a First-Class Honours, she was then awarded a merit-based scholarship covering her entire tuition and living expenses in Manhattan, to pursue an LLM in International Legal Studies from New York University, School of Law.
As the new school year commences, Sakeena looks back at her time at SIL with advice for the current students.

“As an institution, SIL students could have not have picked a better one! This is not only in terms of maintaining an exceptional set of teachers, but also in terms of ensuring students are involved in a range of extra-curriculars to enrich their LLB experiences. It is these experiences that sets them apart from other students, and shapes them to be the future lawyers of Pakistan.
My advice would be to pay attention to lectures and work a little bit every day from day one, and simultaneously, to take advantage of the realm of activities SIL has to offer. Law school is so much more than learning the law and coming out the other end with a degree; its about training to be a lawyer, to attain and polish legal skills that will stick with you throughout your career. Practically, this comes from participating in mock trials, moot courts and law clinic activities in your three years. Fortunately, this is where SIL sets itself apart from other institutions.
Above all, SIL provides a unique opportunity to network with current leading lawyers in the field. Every summer (and often in between the school year too) Ma’am Nida arranged for students to intern with law firms on specific projects or for set time periods. Before I even started my first proper job as a Legal Associate after graduation, I had several job experiences and extra-curriculars already listed on my resumé. I believe this also played a significant role in being one of ten in a batch of 450, to attain the Hauser Global Scholarship from New York University, School of Law for my LLM.
SIL has been more than an institution, the faculty and admin work hard to establish a strong base for you, preparing you for the “real world.”
